Colombia Digital Nomad Visa Requirements: What the Official List Doesn’t Tell You
Colombia Digital Nomad Visa Requirements: What the Official List Doesn’t Tell You
The published Colombia Digital Nomad Visa requirements fit on a single page. What you’ll actually need? That fills a folder.
I’ve been processing these applications since Colombia launched the program in 2022. Here’s what I’ve learned: the official checklist is just the starting point.
The official Digital Nomad Visa requirements
Colombia’s immigration website lists these documents:
- Application form completed online through the visa portal
- Digital photo (3×4 cm, max 300 KB, JPG format)
- Valid passport with at least six months left and blank pages
- Recent entry stamp if you’re applying from inside Colombia
- Proof of residence for certain nationalities applying from another country
- Letter of intent explaining why you want to live in Colombia and what you do for work
- Employment contract or freelance proof showing you work remotely
- Bank statements from the last six months showing regular income
- Health insurance that covers you in Colombia
Sounds simple enough, right?
Not quite.
The documents they’ll probably ask for (that aren’t on the list)
Immigration officers regularly ask for extra documents mid-application. And here’s the stressful part—you usually get about 10 days to deliver them.
Documents I’ve seen requested:
- Migration movements certificate showing when you’ve entered and left Colombia
- Certificate of existence and legal representation if you own a company (needs translation and apostille)
- Criminal background check from your home country (apostilled)
- Notarized and apostilled employer letters that go beyond what HR normally provides
- Proof you finished your courses if you’re switching from a student visa
- Proof you cancelled a previous visa if your situation has changed
- Extended health insurance covering the full visa period
Some of these documents take weeks to get in certain countries. If you’re not prepared, you might miss the deadline and lose your application.
How long does this actually take?
Officially: 30 days.
Realistically: Plan for 45-60 days, sometimes longer.
The 30-day clock pauses every time they request additional documents. Most applications get at least one request. Some get several rounds of back-and-forth.
How long will your visa be?
The Digital Nomad Visa can give you up to two years in Colombia. But most people get:
- 12 months — Usually when health insurance only covers a year
- 18 months — Common for solid applications with extended insurance
- 24 months — Less common; you need exceptional documentation and full coverage
Your health insurance period directly affects your visa length. If your insurance covers 12 months, expect a 12-month visa.
Questions I get asked all the time
Do I need a criminal record check from day one? Not always, but map out the process before you apply. If they request it, you’ll have roughly 10 days to get it apostilled and submitted. Know how long that takes in your country.
Can I bring my family? Yes! You can add your spouse and kids as beneficiaries. They’ll need their own documents too.
What if I’m a freelancer without an employment contract? That’s fine, you can provide client contracts or proof of self-employment instead. The key is showing you consistently work for clients outside Colombia.
Can I apply from inside Colombia? Absolutely. Just include a copy of your most recent entry stamp.
What happens if I get denied? You’ll need to wait six months before trying again. Denials stay on your record and make future applications trickier—which is why it’s worth getting it right the first time.
What if I overstay my visa? Don’t. Overstaying leads to fines, possible deportation, and bans on coming back. Colombia takes immigration rules seriously.
Do I need a Colombian address? Yes, but it can be temporary your Airbnb or hotel works fine. You’ll need it for the application and for getting your Cédula de Extranjería later.
What’s a Cédula de Extranjería? Your Colombian ID card for foreigners. If your visa is longer than three months, you need to apply for one within 15 days of entering the country.
What I’ve learned from doing this over and over
1. Get your documents ready before you start. Apostilles, translations, and notarizations take time. Don’t wait until immigration asks.
2. Your employer letter matters more than you’d think. Vague letters get rejected. Make sure yours specifically says you can work remotely from Colombia.
3. Your bank statements need to tell a clear story. Six months of consistent deposits from sources that make sense. Messy finances raise questions.
4. Health insurance length = visa length. Want the longest possible visa? Get coverage for 24 months.
5. Be upfront about your visa history. Old visas you forgot to cancel? Past complications? Deal with them before applying. Surprises in your record cause problems.
6. Be ready for a phone call. Some consulates interview applicants, especially if your work situation is unusual. Know your case inside and out.
7. Don’t submit a weak application hoping for the best. If your documents aren’t solid, fix them first. Getting denied is way worse than taking extra time to prepare.
The bottom line
Colombia’s Digital Nomad Visa is absolutely doable for most remote workers. But the process rewards people who come prepared, have complete documentation, and understand what immigration actually wants not just what’s listed online.
The official requirements tell you the minimum. Actually getting approved requires more.
That’s where having someone who’s been through this dozens of times can save you a lot of stress, time, and potentially your entire application.
